From "The Surnames of Scotland" by Dr. G.F. Black
Dr. Black did not know the derivation of Smellie.
Early examples include Thomas Smellie, merchant and guild brother in Glasgow, 1612
James Smillie in Strafrank, parish of Carstairs, 1754
William Smellie (1740-1795), printer and naturalist in Edinburgh
Also Smealie 1647 and Smyllie 1697.
