Born in 1901 is fairly recent since my goal is to reach back as far as I can and put them in groups. Perhaps I can give you some hints.
Sounds a lot like descendants of Moses Smelley of NC who first went to GA and then AL. This line is not mine and I can only add occasionally.
I do believe that almost all Smelleys of the southeast U.S. are descendants of William Smelley of 1667 Isle of Wight VA. They radiate out from VA into NC to GA to AL and NC to SC to AL and eventually west. Most answers are in NC. My Stephen Smelley arrived by 1819 in AL and my family stayed. My series I call "Alabama Ancestors". I trace the Smelleys through GA and not in GA.
You need to find your ancestor in the census records. Hopefully you can find her in her birth family in 1910 and perhaps 1920. Even after marriage, big clues are the birth place of her father and the nearby Smelleys. I am not aware of male Smelleys of Moses being in SC. If SC they may be descendants of John Smelley (1806SC-AL)of Talladega AL.
Also, I have found that "Bud" is often a nickname for William.
Hope this helps.
