Mt. Ida was struck by lightning and burned on August 13, 1956.The house and farm had been purchased in 1949 by Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Kent, who had done an extensive rennovation to the mansion, which was built in three sections between 1833-59 by Walker Reynolds.
The family cemetery is on top of the hill to the north of the house site.A marble mausoleum for the remains of Walker Reynolds' first wife, Epsey Gibson, contains an inscription of the inside three walls totalling 496 words.
Mt. Ida Baptist Church was organized in 1885 but the present building was erected after the church burned in 1891.It was also used as a school for about 10 years.
