Ida Haight Smedley Obit
JACKSON — Ida Haight Smedley, age 99 years, of Jackson, formerly of Hudson and the Crystal Lake area, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Country Side Care Center in Jackson. Ida was born on December 20, 1908, in Wheatland Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, the daughter of Fred E. and Genevra (Hopper) Fowler. She graduated from Hudson Area High School in 1925 and was the oldest alumnus. Ida married Wayne J. Haight on February 5, 1930, in Bryan, Ohio. He preceded her in death on December 1, 1971. She married B. Kent Smedley on July 27, 1977, and he preceded her in death on July 19, 1996. Ida enjoyed bowling, dancing, traveling and playing cards and the piano. She was a member of the DAR, the Eastern Star, the Hudson Congregational Church and the Arbor Grove Congregational Church in Jackson. Ida was very active with the church as a Sunday School Teacher and with the Women’s Fellowship.
Ida is survived by three children, Karen (Dorrol) Ford of Clark Lake, Richard W. (Karen) Haight of Bay City and Cherie L. (Philip) Charpentier of South Windsor, Conn.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husbands; one son, Lawrence L. (Kathleen) Haight; and three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor John Dowd officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
