Helen,
I have a William Smedley, born 29 November 1805 at Bulwell,Nottingham, England in my family tree. He emigrated to Australia (do not know date) and married Anne Stokes in 1838. They had 6 children to my knowledge, Margaret, Ann, John, William, Thomas and James (born between 1832 and 1844. I have been unable to trace this family back beyond William in England. Do they fit into your Smedley family?
