Eliza Sophia JONES, born about 1828, possibly in Bristol or Long Ashton (Somerset), England, was probably the daughter of Richard JONES and Sophia. She had a younger brother, George JONES, probably born about 1831.
I believe she married Robert SMART (though possibly not). In any case, they had a daughter, Sophia Jones SMART, born 1853, Castle Precincts, Bristol and baptized 1855, St. Peter's, Liverpool, Lancashire.
In 1861, Eliza Sophia (JONES) SMART is enumerated as a widow. In her home is her daughter, Sophia Jones SMART, her son William SMART (9 months old) and brother George JONES.
By 1871, this small family has moved to Menai Bridge, Anglesey Wales. Eliza Sophia JONES has remarried to Thomas WORRALL, using her maiden name JONES and not her married name, SMART, and had another daughter, Sarah WORRALL. Enumerated with this family are her children, Sophia and William, but using the surname JONES and not SMART. Also interesting, on the marriage record, Eliza Sophia JONES says she is a "spinster" rather than a widow as expected, as well as saying her father's name was Richard JONES, "clerk in an office." Two possible inferences may be drawn: (1) either her children were illegitimate, or (2) for some reason, the family wants to forget Robert SMART -- maybe he abandoned them.
Eliza's daughter, Sophia Jones SMART married Charles GEAR in 1873, but once again, is going by the name Sophia JONES (having dropped the SMART surname). Sophia, too, lists Richard JONES as her father, adds he is deceased, and his occupation was "clerk in an office."
Eliza's son, William SMART, married Mary OWEN in 1881, however, he is using his SMART surname. He states his father was William Richard SMART (but I don't think this person ever existed), deceased, and, once again, "clerk in an office".
Eliza Sophia JONES (SMART, WORRALL) died in 1876.
Eliza's daughter, Sophia Jones SMART (GEAR) died after the 1901 census.
Sophia's children were (all born Menai Bridge, Anglesey, Wales):
(1) Lucy GEAR (married John WILLIAMS)
(2) Eliza GEAR
(3) Phoebe GEAR
(4) Mary GEAR (married George Wild HALLWORTH)
(5) Sophia GEAR
(6) Charles Walter GEAR.
Eliza's son, William Richard SMART died in 1945 in Humboldt Co., California.
William Richard SMART came to the US about 1889 or 90. He is enumerated in the 1895 census with another wife, Elizabeth A. (maiden name not known, born in New York). What became of this 2nd wife, no one knows and in fact the family had never even known of her. The first wife, Mary OWEN, remarried in 1897 (to Robert JONES), presumably giving up on William Richard SMART returning to Wales.
In any case, a few houses away from William Richard SMART and 2nd wife, Elizabeth A., is the OLNEY family. Daughter Mildred Ann OLNEY is married to Herman RUSE who dies in 1898.
By 1900, in Utah, William Richard SMART and Mildred Ann OLNEY (RUSE) are married.
From William's 1st wife, Mary OWEN, there are 4 children, all born in Menai Bridge, Anglesey, Wales:
(1) Laura Sophia SMART
(2) John Charles SMART
(3) William Richard SMART
(4) Owen SMART
From William's 2nd wife, Mildred Ann OLNEY, there are 8 children (born in Montana and South Dakota):
(1) Lee Olney SMART
(2) Oliver Knight "OK" SMART
(3) Ardie Mack "Max" SMART
(4) William Richard "Bill" SMART
(5) Olive Saphronia Roselinda Terrill Olney SMART
(6) Mildred Anne "Mid" SMART
(7) Sophia Belle "Sis" SMART
(8) Helen Elizabeth SMART
The only reason I take the family this far down in the tree is to show the repetition of the name Sophia and one of the reasons I believe Eliza Sophia JONES (SMART, WORRALL) may have been the daughter of Richard JONES and Sophia.
