Roy Rogers cowboy star aka Leonard Slye

Does anyone know why Leonard Slye changed his name to Roy Rogers before he became famous as "King of the Cowboys" in the movies ? I'm guessing it was changed for him by the studio who didn't like the word 'slye'.

Who were Leonard Slye's family and what line do they follow ? Is anyone posting here related to this line in some way ?

Leonard "Roy" was born 1912 and died July 1998 at age 86. His long-time wife Dale Evans just died Feb 8, 2001 at age 88.
