Wendy,
Both sides of the border between today's Slovakia and Poland is populated by a mini-ethnic group, known by the Polish name Gorals = Highlanders, the language and culture of which blends aspects of Slovak and Polish. After WWI and WWII, small areas of what had been first the old Kingdom of Hungary and then Slovakia were ceded to Poland. These areas, including part of former Spis County, included a couple of dozen villages. It sounds to me like your ancestor came from one of those Spis villages.
