Brezno Research

I will be driving thru Slovakia next week during my first trip to Eastern Europe to see the town of Brezno where my grandparents immigration records say they're from (about 1909 - Breznobanya back then). Is there a location that might have old records pertaining to their families (church, birth, etc) that I might inquire at? The family name is Cernak which I understand is the name of a Mafia figure in Slovakia!!
Will also pass thru Salgojarjan, Hungary where my grandfather was actually born and have the same question about that town. All I know is he had 3 brothers, supposedly killed in the war (WWI?) and I am curious to know if there's a way to confirm this. Thanks for any help anyone can be.
