CELEBRATE SLOVAK HERITAGE - Toronto area
Slovak Spirit in Today's Society
The first Slovak immigrant to Canada arrived in 1887 to found a nail factory in Toronto, now the largest Slovak community in Canada. This exhibit demonstrates the Slovaks' settlement in Canada and how they eagerly integrated into society and embraced their adopted land. Gallery visitors can view artifacts the Slovaks' brought with them, including wood carvings, needlecrafts and celebratory costumes and also learn how they carry on their feast day traditions. Also featured are the Slovak Midland Cross, a Fujara, which is a large echoing mountain fife and a Valaska, a decorated wood-chopping axe.
The exhibit runs until September 29, 2008.
