Zavada/Zsigmund/Guleu

My paternal greatgrandfathers name was Joseph Smith. That is the name he was given at Ellis Island. My grandmother told me that he was born in Slovakia, and that his name was Yosef Zavada altho the spelling of the last name may be incorrect. He immigrated in 1899. His wife was Polish, named Mary, and her maiden name was some variation of Zsigmond. She immigrated in 1900. His brothers name was Thomas Zavada, and he listed Jehnic (?) Poland as his birth place. Joseph listed that his parents were from Austria/Hungary. He and Mary listed that they came from Austria, as did Thomas. Joseph listed his mothers maiden name as Kate Guleu. Can anyone make any sense out of any of this for me? Thanks.
