>>> I am planning a trip to a local LDS-FHC, but I don't know where to begin in searching their records, or how. Are the staff helpful in most cases or am I on my own? <<<
1) The staff are all volunteers. They are helpful. They will help you with ordering films and booking and operating the film readers.
2) The staff are NOT Slovak and likely have little idea where Slovakia is found on a map. You are on your own.
3) You will arrive with the film numbers that you need to order (see below). That, and some cash to pay for the film rental. Have you specified a religion? I am assuming GC. If you find the film(s) informative/useful, pay for threesuccessive rentals and the film becomes "permanent" at your local FHC.
CHURCH RECORDS AT LATTER DAY SAINTS (MORMON) LDS FAMILY HISTORY CENTER (FHC)
When searching for genealogical information, knowing the birth village is paramount because records are organized by village not nationally, so it is not possible to search on a national basis. It is also necessary to know the religion. To locate church records for Slovakia, knowing the village/town name, go to the LDS web site: www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.aspThe church records cover baptisms (krsteni), marriages (sobeseni) and deaths (zomreli).
1869 Hungarian Census (very informative)

LOCATE YOUR NEAREST FAMILY HISTORY CENTER AND ORDER FILM
You can go to the LDS web site to locate your nearest Family History Center (FHC) and determine their hours of operation. You will need to go there in person to order the film(s). In about a month, the films will arrive and you can book a film reader and begin your research.
1910 HUNGARIAN MAP
The old Hungarian map can be found at: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/zemplen.jpghttp://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/zemplen.jpg
Look in the pink area, upper right of map, to find Kalna Rosztoka.
SAVE the map on YOUR computer. OPEN the map in any graphics program. CUT and PRINT the relevant section of the map. Otherwise, you just get a corner. This map uses the Hungarian village names that you will likely find in church records.
