Dear John,
Thank you for your prompt reply.I will attempt to follow up on #1 to see if I can find any church records.
I am quite familiar with the map that you mentioned.I cannot recognize a town on that map that resembles the one on the draft registration card. This man's naturalization papers state that he was born in "Krilovce".We thought that there might be a misspelling, but the town on the draft card doesn't resemble this name. We were thinking that in 1917 things might be fresher in this man's mind than in 1937 when he finally became a citizen.Quite confusing.
The naturalization papers say that he arrived on the President Cleveland on Oct.9, 1910.I have scoured every page of that manifest to no avail. But I did manage to find his wife on a later manifest, which states the town of Vorosvagas that you have referenced in your reply. We are certain that she is the correct person since the manifest clearly states that she is meeting her husband, Stefan Hancsak in Munhall, PA , which is where he was located. She is also the correct age on the manifest.Other relatives thought that they had married in the United States, but one day, on a whim, I decided to check for her married name.
Now, concerning this response:"2) The Adam Theorem, developed on a competing site, says that the other village is probably within two villages distance."What "other village" do we speak of?
On one happy note, I did manage to find my other grandfather, after searching for over a year.I knew that he had come over on the President Grant. So, I searched every line on the manifest for the day of arrival, and on the very last page, I found him.His last name was Mrena. But, the manifest was tranlated as Unvena, due to the handwriting.I had tried plugging in every possible combinations of spelling, but I must admit, that one never entered my mind. Now, if only I could have such luck with Hancsak!
Thanks for your help.I will certainly follow up on your suggestions.
Barbara
