I saw that entry and the fact that it stands alone suggests that it is an unusual spelling or that it's an erronious spelling. Don't take the spellings shown in the EI indexes as gospel. Many names were misspelled when folks got off the boat and many more were misspelled when the Ellis Is. computer program was constructed. I'm more inclined to think that the original name started with Mihal.... or Michal...If you call up an index for Mihalek or Michalak, for instance, you get hundreds of names because names with this root are extremely common. The spelling is a problem for this reason; in most European languages ME is not pronounced "mee" but "may". It doesn't matter if it's German, Slovak,Polish,or Hungarian. When you get into americanizations it's my experience that most spellingchanges took place long after people arrived in this country and anything is possible because people wanted to fit in so badly. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good Hunting.
