My understanding from theHistory of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America By Ezra Hall Gillett (1864) and some other references, is that James Long Sloss had a brother Joseph, a tailor by trade, who is mentioned as the first person to have apprenticed Andrew Johnson in Mooresviile Ala. (Andrew Johnson: A Biography By Hans L. Trefousse). Joseph's son was James Withers Sloss, the Birmingham iron magnate, and thus a cousin of my great great grandfather, James Long Sloss II of St Louis. Visit my genealogy page at http://mitchrice.org/blog/, I keep adding information to that page.
