You are right about Ralph Russell.Charles E. Slocum, Ricketson, and a couple of others, stated that Ralph Russell and Anthony Slocum came here to Dartmouth and started the first forge. In checking records at the Dartmouth Town Hall, I could not find anything to show they did. It is also claimed that Giles started the first forge, and again, I could not substanciate that fact. Anthony supposedly owned land, built a house, and was killed on a bridge during King Philips War, all in Dartmouth, but again, that info is false.
We must keep in mind, that the original Town Hall was located on what is now Bush Street, in a building that burned down, located on the same site as the now existing Dartmouth School Department Building. All records were destroyed. Most of the information, we know have, was supposedly reconstructed from information which the first Dartmouth Land Surveyor posessed.
The first mill recorded in Dartmouth was situated at Smith Mills in 1664.
The recorded early settlers and proprietors with the name of Russell were;
John Russell ; John, Jr. ; Jonathan ; Joseph ; Joseph, Jr. and Thomas.(A Joseph and John were born twins at the Russell Garrison,at the time of King Philips war, but doubt the previous persons are they).
John Russell is the supposed son of Ralph.
On March 20, 1661, John Russell purchased from Myles Standish his full share of Dartmouth.This comprised of the area called Padanaram (where I live) and comprised of 3,200 acres.
Dartmouth was made a town at the General Court of Election at Plymouth on June 8, 1664.
My daughter lives across the street from the spot where John Russell built his house, the foundation still existing.It has been rumored that the house either had been destroyed, and the foundation was used as a fort against the Indians, or the whole structure was used as a fort, because in 1675 the homestead was designated the garrison building to be used as a place of refuge in case of hostil attack..(During King Philip's wr.).
I didn't mean to ramble on, but thought this might interest you.
