Slocum connection to Mary Dyer
I'm trying to find out if anyone has any information that might provide a more definite conclusion as to whether Mary Barrett Dyer was really Mary Stewart Dyer. Her connection to the Slocums is through Bathsheba Hull Slocum, who was a great-granddaughter of Mary Dyer. (Bathsheba's husband was Ebenezer Slocum, grandson of Giles Slocum.)
I have heard rumors and speculations for both sides of the argument, and frankly, I haven't slightest idea of what to conclude. If Mary Dyer was really Mary Stewart rather than Mary Barrett, then she was the daughter of Lady Arabella Stewart and Sir William Seymour. If she was Mary Barrett, then everyone who is descended from her is a loss as to where she came from, because I am one of several people who haven't been able to find any records on a Mary Barrett to prove that she even existed. The only record listing her name that of her marriage to William Dyer, but I don't know of anything else.
I have found indications that William Dyer wasn't just any commoner, so how could he have gotten away (in 1600s England) with marrying a woman who seemingly came from nowhere?
If ANYONE has any information on Mary Dyer's lineage, please contact me!
Thanks!
