Randy,
In the Dartmouth VRs is: “Deborah, d. Deliverance of D., and Eliezer Slocum, s. Eliezer of D., 20th, 7 mo. 1716 [Sept. 20, 1716], C.R.3.” [Dartmouth MM records.]After cross-referencing a whole lot of people associated with the Society of Friends in the Dartmouth VRs, I have yet to find a misstatement regarding a couple’s individual status at marriage (single, widow, widower, etc., who their parents were or whether one or both parents were eceased at the time of the child’s marriage.)Thus, the earlier genealogy of the Howlands and Smiths (Franklyn Howland, 1908ish) and then in “Kerby’s of New England,” which variously states Deborah was the widow Howland when she and Eliezer Slocum Jr. married, has to be an error. But, the obvious is not always the case in genealogy so one asks those who have researched before for elimination or confirmation.
Whether Deborah was first married to a Howland is irrelevant to my ancestry.Eleizer and Deborah’s son John (Deborah Almy) continue my line through daughter Elsie, who md. Michael Deuel (corrupted from Davol, Devol, Devel, Dewell etal.)The letter “u” in Deuel is actually the letter “v” in early New England writing.Since they were Quakers, I can understand the “intentional” mistake to avoid the phonetic equivalent of Devil.
While I am aware of the continuation of Michael and Elsie’s line through dau. Elizabeth (William Bell, Alburg, Grand Isle, VT), with comprehensive family detail, probate, deeds, photos, etc. from William and Elizabeth(Deuel) Bell forward, my weak spot is where did the majority of the interrelated Smith, Slocum, Deuel and Howland cousins in Dartmouth go to in New York in the mid-1700s?
Hence, I notice your research interest in the Oblong, Nine Partners and adjoining town areas of Duchess Co, NY.Elsie (Slocum) Deuel [April 17, 1753 in Dartmouth - May 17, 1809] probably died at the home of daughter Elizabeth (Deuel) Bell in Alburg, VT on the shore of Lake Champlain.Elsie’s husband Michael died in Alburg on January 12, 1830.Michael and Elsie’s marriage is not in the Dartmouth VRs.A recently added website regarding one of the towns in Duchess Co. has considerable bio and descendant material on at least one Slocum (Samuel) and mentions a Philip Deuel (who was perhaps either Michael’s father Philip Sr. or Michael’s brother Philip Jr.)
If any of your research will assist me, I would greatly appreciate a lead or two.I have not been able to obtain and read the associated MM records in greater Duchess Co., NY.
Regards
Don Blauvelt
