Hi Marcy. I think I may be a descendant of this man. Your post is 10 yrs. old and you may have disposed of the photo by now, so it's a long shot. He was a Civil War veteran in the 5th Illinois Voluntary Calvary on the staff of General John McConnell. He wrote about his experiences in the war and hardships including the battle of Vicksburg. In the early 1880's he traveled extensively in the New Mexico territory by stage and train and had many harrowing experiences in the old west with bandits, roughnecks and wild indians. His eye for detail and journalistic mindset were recorded in letters to the editor for the Salina Journal (Kansas) called "Leaves from New Mexico".
