John TOLER b.c1798 NC who m. 2nd to Mary SLOAN in 1849 MO
Searching for info about the John TOLER b.c1798 in Buncombe Co., NC who married 2nd to Mary SLOAN on Apr. 22, 1849 in Polk Co., MO (per marriage record).
Mary SLOAN was said to be a daughter of John SLOAN and Sarah McKNIGHT but I have no proof of that as this info was passed on to me with no sources cited, but perhaps it will lead to a discovery of proof for someone of this family line.
From the 1850 Dist. 71, Polk Co., MO census - dated Sept. 30th
I foundJohn TOLER age 52 (b.c1798) male, white, carpenter, 1,200 real estate value b. NC
Mary L. 35 (b.c1815) female, white no occupation, b. NC
Christopher C. TOLER age 25, male, white, carpenter b. TENN.
Martha TOLER age 21 b. TN
William Toler 18 b. TN farmer
Mary 16 b. TN
Laura 9 b. Missouri
Walter TOLER 7 months old b. MO
and Alexander SMITH age 20, male, white, farmer b. MO
******************************************************
Apparently all of the older children are by John TOLER's 1st wife Mary IRVIN but little Walter TOLER at age 7 months old (b. about Feb. 1850) is his first child with new wife Mary SLOAN whom he married in April of 1849.
What puzzles me though is that the older children are all listed as being born in Tennessee and yet I cannot find John TOLER in TN, or at least I didn't think he was the correct John TOLER but perhaps he was after all.
Also because pre-1850 we only get the Male heads of household's name and not those of the entire family which makes it difficult to tell who's who with any real accuracy.
Apparently this John TOLER moved to Missouri sometime around c1840 because his daughter Laura who is about age 9 is listed as being born in Missouri. Then there is a 6 to 7 year gap between the births of child Laura at age 9 in MO to the next eldest child shown which is Mary age 16 b. TN.
Perhaps there was a child in between these two who either died or perhaps had already left home.Just a guess on my part.
John's 1st wife Mary Irvin's father was named Christopher Columbus Irvin so this explains the naming of what appears to be the first son as Christopher TOLER. Perhaps the naming of the 2nd eldest son shown in this c1850 census then is a clue as to the name of this John TOLER's father...William TOLER???Again, this is just a guess on my part but I have found some William TOLER/Tolar's in NC and I believe in the Cumberland Co. area.
I have recently had a message reply that someone who looks to descend from a group of TolAr's of the Cumberland Co., NC area have a TOLAR-MOODY marriage in their line.
Perhaps there is some Cross-Over link here.I am not at all familiar with the Toler/Tolar family branches and the only reason I have interest in this is because I have a very close Ydna match to a person who descends from the John TOLER / Mary SLOAN branch.
Since they do not match to any other Toler/Tolar's in the Ydna project so far, at the moment its Possible but certainly Not proven, that the John TOLER line could descend from a male born to a Toler mother but whose father was actually a MOODY.
Since our Ydna MOODY's were from around the same areas in NC as some of these Toler's/Tolar's, it Might be a possibility especially since the Ydna test results can't be argued with, they are what they are and they are showing a very close match between the two families.
Our earliest known Ydna ancestor was a Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. Londonderry, Nor. Ireland who married Jean McQUISTON (more commonly spelled as McCuiston in the South). They came to New Castle, DE c1735 and removed to PA for a short while before again removing to Guilford Co., NC. Some of their children and grandchildren and other descendants lived in ROWAN Co., NC, Surry and Stokes Co., NC as well as other areas in those general vacinities. Then some of the descendants removed to TN, OH, KY, MO, ARK, AL, MS etc. Some went out West too. We have ydna Moody cousin's from Nova Scotia, CAN to CA and we believe down in Australia too.
Our most recent Ydna (partially matching) MOODY cousin was from a branch that lived in Darlington Co., SC and whose descendants removed to very southern Alabama and then out to Texas.
OH and did I mention that this John Toler ydna cousin does not match ydna to any of the other Toler/Tolar's in the Ydna Surname project??This also tends to further support the idea that this particular John TOLER b.c1798 in NC MIGHT actually be born of a MOODY but given his mother's name of Toler. We have No proof of this so far though and the only real way to absolutely Prove it is to have another male descendant of this John TOLER and Mary SLOAN branch to also be Ydna tested and if they match to us, we'll know then that John TOLER was actually a John MOODY.
Could also explain why folks are having such difficulty finding his lineage line as well too.
Hopefully we can help each other...Please leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank You.
