Thanks for your reply, Jennifer. My great grandmother's name was Winifred Mary. I was mistaken in giving her father's name as William- it was Thomas McLoughney.
I'm still researching the McLoughney/Slevin families but they were almost certainly from North Tipperary.
Winifred married a James (or William) Whelan (in some records Phelan) and they had a son, Ned, in Killanafinch (between Nenagh and Thurles, North Tipp.) in 1850. After arrival in Australia they had two more children, Catherine and William.
I will keep you informed.
