WORCESTER - Samuel Sleeper, 86, of 12 Duncannon Ave, formerly of Charlton, a school educator and camp director, died Sunday in the Jewish Healthcare Center after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Leah (Wechsler) Sleeper; three sons, Robert Sleeper of Morristown, N.J., Martin Sleeper of Wellesley and Dr. Arthur Sleeper of Martinsville, Va.; two brothers, Frank Sleeper of New Seabury and Arnold Sleeper of Longmeadow; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
Born in Worcester, son of Joseph and Ida (Sher) Sleeper, he moved to Charlton in 1945 and returned to Worcester in 1973. He graduated from Classical High School in 1928, Clark University in 1930, and earned a master's degree from Columbia University, New York City, in 1931. He took doctoral courses in American civilization at Harvard University in Cambridge.
Mr. Sleeper was coordinator of social studies 10 years in the Worcester public school system, retiring in 1977. He previously was a teacher and head of the social studies department at Commerce High School and later at Doherty Memorial High School.
He and his wife were the owners and directors of Camp Wamsutta in Charlton, which they founded in 1945. They retired in 1968.
Mr. Sleeper was a member of Sons of Israel Synagogue in Webster and Oxford Lodge of Masons. He was past president of the Worcester Community Concert Association and a 50-year member of the Worcester County Music Association. He was a member of the Clark University Alumni Association, the Massachusetts and Southern Worcester County Teachers associations, and the National Education Association.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Perlman Funeral Home, 1026 Main St. Burial will be in Holy Society Cemetery, Leicester. Visitation will be held through Sunday evening at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury St., Worcester 01609; or another charity.
