Hi Andrew, The Thomas Sleeper who came to America was a Congregationalist in Hampton, NH. The records are in the Dict. of Maine & New Hampshire. Thomas & his wife, Joanna, or rather Goodwife Sleeper are noted in the Congregational Church Records according to the Dict. of Maine & New Hampshire. What he was in England - I don't know. The Congregationalists were very strict also and were the church that the king of England okayed for these colonies in the Massachusetts Bay Area anyway. Recent new information has been found that indicates that our American Thomas Sleeper of Hampton, NH was possibly/probably the son of a Thomas Sleeper and Elizabeth Sherburne who were married in 1615. This jives perfectly with our American Thomas Sleeper who died at age 80 in 1696; making 1616 his birth date. In this marriage of 1615, a Moses Sleeper was born. Go to LDS and look it up. I do not believe anyone knows which ship the our Thomas Sleeper sailed on. He was known in this country from 1640 and none of his children were born until about five years later. I have looked and looked for ship records and I find none; neither does anyone else who looked for me. I know that in this period of time, the English gave up on requiring ship lists of passengers-which means to me that the ship's captains were not necessarily required to turn in the passenger lists - probably a lot of these lists just did not survive. England became so overcrowded that she did not really care how many left-I am thinking when I read English history. Virginia Sleeper-Terry Notify Administrator about this message?
