Emma Hilfers obit submitted - mmn=Sleeper

Emma Hilfers was born on September 10, 1912, at Sheldon, Iowa to Wert and Bena Sleeper Ennenga. In 1915, the family moved to a farm west of Wilmont, Minnesota. Emma grew up on the family farm and attended country school. On December 25, 1935, she and Henry Hilfers were married at Rushmore, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed near Wilmont for five years. In 1940, they moved to a farm in Fenton Township and farmed there for 33 years. They retired from farming in 1973 and moved to Lake Wilson. Henry died on March 23, 1979. Emma continued living in Lake Wilson until 1995 when she moved to Maple View Estates in Fulda. Emma became a resident of the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda in 2000 and passed away there on February 26, 2005, at the age of 92. She was a member of the Iona Presbyterian Church and was past President and Treasurer of the Ladies Aid. She also taught Bible school and Sunday school. Emma also was a member of the Lake Wilson community Club, Ladies Tea Club, and volunteered at the Lake Wilson Clothing Center. Emma and Henry both enjoyed the P & M miniature railroad now located at End of the Line Railroad Park in Currie, Minnesota. Emma’s favorite pastimes included quilting, sewing, making teddy bears, kittens, and dogs for her grandchildren, gardening, baking and watching the Minnesota Twins. Emma had a faithful pet, her dog Scotty. She usually had a menagerie of animals at the Hilfers farm including miniature ponies, a deer, possum and a fox.

Survivors include six children and their spouses: Marilyn and Louis Haase, Skokie, IL; Robert and Alma Hilfers, Rochester, MN; James and Sharon Hilfers, Eveleth, MN; Janiece and James Claire, Rochester, MN; Nancy Peyton, Fulda, MN and Stephen Peyton, Minneapolis, MN; and Edward and Linda Hilfers, St. Cloud, FL; 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry; granddaughter Amy Claire; one brother Peter Ennenga; and three sisters: Hattie Moerke, Martha Hippert, and Fannie Dirks. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church Iona, MN on Thursday March 3, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Foster officiating. The organist was Loretta Tammen. The pallbearers are Russell Hilfers, Todd Hilfers, Brian Claire, Paul Haase, Tom Hilfers, Wayne Claire, Joel Peyton, Nathan Hilfers, and David Hilfers Interment is in Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.
