Hi, Karen - I think I found your William on the 1860 Census and his wife's name is listed as Ellen, instead of Helen, maybe just an error by the Census taker. But it looks like he was born in Pennsylvania, not Indiana. (Note: the children's names.) On March 2, 1864, I think this same William enlisted in the Civil War. He is noted as living in Laconia, Indiana, at that time, and that may be why there was confusion about where he was born.
My guess is that he is probably the son Frederick Slaymaker, who was in Indiana fairly early. If you look on the 1850 Census you will see this same William in the home of Frederick. I don't know where you got that birth date that you have, but it is my guess that that birth date and place is not accurate.
