Private, Company E, 33rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Member of the Andrews Raiders. Recipient of one of the first Posthumously awarded Congressional Medals of Honor. This was issued on July 28, 1883 for one of 19 of 22 men who (under the direction of Gen. Mitchell) penetrated over 200 miles south into the enemy territory to capture a railroad train at Big Shanty, GA.
Samuel was hanged June 18, 1862 at southeast corner of Fair Street and South Park Avenue in Atlanta, GA. This was a result of his capture and court-martial in Knoxville, TN.
Originally buried at Atlanta, GA. Moved to Chattanooga National Cemetery.
