First "across family lines" match in Slaven DNA Project

(First, my apologies to those who read more than one of these message boards; we're just excited at the results of the project and want to reach all the surname variations.)

The Slaven DNA Project received its first "across family lines" match this week, between a descendant of Richard Slavey and a descendant of John Slavin of Garrard County, Kentucky. The project results page at http://www.slavens.net/dna/results.htm has been updated with the latest results and a bit of explanation.

These two participants were a perfect match on the 12 marker test. Based on current research, there is a 50 percent probability that the most recent common male ancestor between the two lines lived within the past 14 generations, or approximately the last 300 years.

This does not prove that John and Richard were father/son, uncle/nephew, cousins, second cousins, etc. There is even a slight chance that the two lines are not related at all; in about 9 percent of the cases where two individuals match all 12 markers on the standard test, the individuals match fewer than 23 of 25 markers on the expanded test which pushes the timeline of the most recent common ancestor back to about 40 generations or 1,000 years.

However, because the haplotype (the "collection" of values that make up the test results) involved is uncommon, the similarity in names, and the proximity of the two lines in the early 19th century, it's highly unlikely that the two lines aren't connected. The question now is "how?"

Straight-line male descendants of Slaven(s), Slavey, Slavin, Slevin, etc. are welcome (encouraged!) to participate in the Slaven DNA Project. The more lines that are tested, the more sure we can be of connections-- or the lack of connection-- between various lines. Additional participants from lines already in the study are valuable in that they can confirm the status of the family line-- for example, that the John Slavin of Highland County, Virginia line truly doesn't connect with the other lines, and not the current participant had a "non-paternity event" in his background.

Anyone with questions on the results, how they're interpreted, how to participate, etc. can contact me directly-- or post the question to the board if it would be of interest to others.
