So your ancestor is Eli Pate who married Mattie Graham? For what it is worth, Martha Simpson's husband was Phillip Simpson who appears on the 1840 Washington Co., AL census and was shot before 1850.Some time ago I had a woman write me about a Derril Payne who was her ancestor and I told her there was a Derril Payne listed on the Polk Co. TX 1870 census in the household of John SlatterI feel he must be related to the Payne women, but he is much younger (38) in 1870.It is also interesting to note that on the 1830 Washington Co., Al census there is a William Slatter with sons the approx age of John, Lewis, and Richard living very near a William Loper. Also on the same census page just a few houses away is Phillip Simpson.Coincidence?Josehp Loper and Martha Simpson are living next door to each other in 1850, as are Peter Loper and Lewis Slatter in 1860.James
