I only know of one child of Thomas, son of Henry and Ann, who was born at Bowen's and that was Tom - is he your grandfather? He was baptised at Fownhope on 16 September 1883 along with his elder sister Emily. It does not surprise me that he was not allowed to stay at Bowen's after Tom was born, as the story that has come down to us is that Thomas was the black sheep of the family, although we have never discovered exactly what his sins were! He is certainly the most elusive of Henry and Ann's children and I have only recently discovered very much about him.
However he is not the Thomas Slade in Hyde Park barracks in 1881 as that one is unmarried and Thomas had married Fanny Wargent or Huff in 1877. On his marriage certificate he described himself as a bricklayer and that seems to be what he remained
I have never been able to track him down in the 1881 Census as he travelled about all over the country as a bricklayer - one of his sons John was born in Scotland. Is Fanny your great-grandmother? I was not aware that Thomas had been in the Army at some point so any information you have about that would be very welcome. The Thomas in Hyde Park Barracks was his second cousin and was born at Dinedor a village not far from Fownhope - did the two boys run away and join the Army together?
