Slade-Bruce/VA-MO-AR
The surname SLADE is the subject of my genealogical research in reference to my wife's ancestry. I'm at the 1870 *wall* with the following family:
US Census 1870, Arkansas, Jacksonport Township, Jackson County, page 343, Line 7:
NameAgeSexColorOccupationBirth Place
Slade, William 29 M B Laborer Maryland
Lucy Ann 30 F B Keeping House Virginia
Bruce, Charles 11 M M at home Missouri
Lena May 8 F M at home Arkansas
Bettie 4 F B Missouri
Slade, Nannie 3 F B Arkansas
Willie 6/12 F B Arkansas Dec (month born)
Family Oral History (FOH) is thus: Lucy Ann was a slave and her first child was fathered by her owner. The 1870 census suggests the following:
1. The slave owner's name may have been BRUCE.
2. Lucy married William SLADE after the birth of Bettie.
3. Her migration pattern is VA to MO to AR.
4. Birth pattern of the first three children suggests Lucy may have left family in MO.
My wife descends through Nannie, m. George (?) NASH, dau. Willie, m. Gene McCRATY, son Gilbert (wife's father) who turned 97 this past March. Gilbert was raised in Newport, AR by his g-aunt Lena, till age 16 when he moved to St. Louis, MO. Gene McCRATY died in Omaha, NE.
Anyone connected in any way, shape, or form is invited to post a reply.I have census information on the family for 1880, 1900, and 1910. Union Township and Town of Newport, AR.
