Paul, I have been doing an extensive one name study of Skipworth. I have only ever encountered two Jonathans, whom I believe were first cousins.
The first was Jonathan, aged 1 in 1851 at home with his parents John Skipworth Ag Lab and Elizabeth nee DAWES at Thornton by Horncastle, Lincs. In 1861 this Jonathan would have been 11, but he is not at home with his parents or found elsewhere in the census. At 11 it would be quite unusual for him to be away working as a farm boy, and I have to conclude he had died before 1861, though so far I have not traced his death or burial record.
The second Jonathan was age 6 in 1861 living with his parents Samuel Skipworth and Mary nee GREENBANK at Thornton. His birthplace was given in 1861 as Thornton Moor, which was an extraparochial allotment area for Thornton by Horncastle parish.
In 1871 he was age 17, a servant at Sutterton in Boston RD, and gave his birthplace as Thornton.
In 1876, aged 22, he was married in Kendal Registration District. His wife was Mary GREENBANK according to FreeBMD database.
In 1881 he was 28, grocer's assistant at Accrington, Lancashire, with wife and 2 chn, the brother-in-law living with a large Taylor family. Christiana Taylor and Mary Skipworth, who were both born Natland Westmoreland, were presumably sisters. His birthplace in 1881 was given as Lincoln which I take to mean Lincolnshire. This often happened when people had moved far from their birthplace. They didn't state it accurately because the locals would not have heard of Thornton. Also he was not the head of the household. Mr Taylor would have filled out the form and probably thought Lincoln was near enough.
In 1891 he was age 39, at Kendal Westmoreland with the birthplace Hornton instead of Thornton, probably a transcription error. He had the same wife and eldest child that he had in 1881, but his second child Samuel had died.
In 1901 still at Kendal, market gardener, age 49, birthplace Thornton - it all fits quite neatly.

I do not have a relationship with these Skipworths, but have studied them along with many others as part of my one-name study. Our Skipworths were further north in Lincolnshire.

I look forward to hearing what you can add. Mary died in 1910 but I do not have Jonathan's death. I have 5 children for the couple.

Can you please tell me if any of what I have written conflicts with your knowledge. Can you also please tell me what certificates you have been able to consult. I don't want to see all the certificates myself but like to note in my database that they have been verified by another family member, where possible.

Regards

Mary Skipworth
