MISC NOTE -
William Benjamin Skipper (parents unknown Grice and Julianne Walker) was born Abt 1845 in Brunswick County, NC. He died 24 May 1927 in Norfolk Virginia. William Bemjamin Skipper was born William Benjamin Grice. He was either adopted or raised by two other husbands. First by (unknown first name) "EDDY" and next by Henry Andrew Jackson Skipper changing his name to SKIPPER The 1860 census shows Julianne Walker as Julianne EDDY and list William Benjamin Skipper with the last name of "EDDY" age 15. 2 other children are also shown. Further search of 1850 census shows him listed alone living in the town of Monroe county of Union, NC. He' s listed as Wm B. Skipper. It shows his age as 14. If this is true then he was born in 1836. His 95 year old daughter Julia, told Thelma Branch that he was 81 when he died. If this is true then he was born in 1846. Wm B lied about his age on all occasions, even his death certificate which has his age at time of death at 66 in 1927. I believe it is likely that he was born in 1836 living to be 91 instead of 81 according to his daughter Julia. He was quite a lady's man. He married 5 times and lied about his age each time..Wife #2 was Dorothy (Cowen), age 17 (he gave his age as 17 also, but was probably age 31). She became pregnant and died trying to give birth. Wife #3 was Julia (Skipper) . She became pregnant with Bertha Samalthia, Thelma's mother. Wife #1 Was Mary Alice (Skey) age 20. She was my great grandmother, giving birth to Mary and William Henry,(my maternal grandfather) dying in childbirth with him. Wife #4 Married Dorothy (Bradshaw), no children except a daughter by her previous marriage. She died of typhoid fever. Wife #5 Maggie (Swindell), age 15. He gave his age as 35, but he was probably 46. She raised Wm Heney and had 3 daughters and a son named Garland Skipper . William Benjamin Skipper is buried in Riverside Magnolia cemetary in Norfolk, Virginia. Death certificate showhing dying from Myacarditis... Chronic Intestitial hephritis.
William Benjamin married Mary Alice (Skey). Mary Alice (parents William H. Skey and Mary Frances Skey) died Feb 1882. NOTE - Married 5 Times
1. William Benjamin Skipper and Mary Alice (Skey) had the following children: 1. Mary Skipper Mary was first born of this marriage. It was marraige #3 for William Benjamin Skipper 2. William Henry Skipper was born Feb 1882 in Washington, NC. He died 22 Jan 1931 in Frederickburg, Virginia.
2. William Benjamin Skipper married Dorothy (Cowan)
3. William Benjamin Skipper and Julia (?) Skipper had the following children: 1. Bertha Samalthia Skipper.
4. William Benjamin Skipper married Dorothy (Bradshaw)
5. William Benjamin Skipper married Maggie (Swindell)

THE home of Abijah Hollingsworth Skipper and his wife Sarah C. (Smith) Skipper. It stood on the southeast corner of the intersection of Laurel Street and Sixth Avenue in Conway, South Carolina. A.H. Skipper was the sheriff of Horry County in the late 1860s and in the 1870s. His father was Joel B. Skipper, who served as state senator from Horry. Abijah Skipper was born near the Little Pee Dee River just downriver from Gallivant's Ferry in Horry District, SC. Sarah was from the Little River, SC area. Both are buried in the Conway First United Methodist Churchyard. Abijah Skipper and Sarah are sitting in front of the steps. I believe that pictured standing to the left of the steps is Henry Homer Burroughs, beside him standing on the porch is his wife, Isadora C. (Skipper) Burroughs, sitting in a chair on the porch is an unidentified man, standing on the porch to the right is Julia (Skipper) Causey and standing to the right of the steps and behind Sarah is Capt. Coleman S. Causey. An unidentified boy is standing in the yard to the right. Notice the "joggling board" on the front porch. The house was purchased by Dr. Henry L. Scarborough and around 1918 it was demolished to make way for the house that is currently (2006) located on the lot.
