I had enver noticed that before Judy. While I agree that the term "son" was a common reference to one's son-in-law as well, I am intrigued by the seeming differentiation of "Thomas of Kings Towne" and "Thomas my son."So I checked back through my material.
Apparently, Sarah married her cousin Thomas Skillman, the second son of Benjamin Skillman and Margaret Coe, then living at Dutch Kills. This accounts for the "Thomas of Kinstowne."
William Jones Skillman, author of "The Skillmans of America and their Kin" concludes that the Anne that got the chintz gown was the daughter of this Thomas and Sarah.I might agree, but am struck by the reference to Thomas of Kinstown in that formula twice, but just referring to "my son Thomas" in regards to the bequest to Anne of the dress.I am also struck that while John and Anna named children after the maternal grandparents, they neglected to name a son Thomas after the paternal grandfather.
I am going to footnote the section of my work that lists the children of John and Anna, and leave open the possibility that there may have been a son Thomas, in addition to the son-in-law Thomas.
