Following up my own message, I know, but I've discovered further evidence of the ancestry of many of the Skillings from Oxford County in Ontario.James and Elizabeth Skillings
sailed on either the William Ritchie or the Tulloch Castle around 1836.They had three children in England and 6 in Canada.Elias was one I descended from.I've made contact with others who have descended from George Henry one of the youngest.I believe there was a sister called Hannah too.
James was born around 1813 and died in 1885.
His father was Edmund Skillings born around 1792 in Edgefield Norfolk, died in 1876.He was married to Elizabeth Knights in 1813.James was their first child.
Edmund's father was William Skillings, born around 1754 in Edgefield, died in 1841.He was married to Rachel Middleton in 1781. Edmund was the youngest of 5.
William's father was Edmund Skelling, born around 1722 in Edgefield died around 1771.He married Sarah Framlington in 1745 in Cley Norfolk and WIlliam was the youngest of 5.His father subsequently married Mary Reynor in 1761 and they had a further four children.
Edmund's father was Richard Skelling who died in 1730 in Edgefield. He married Ann and they had 6 children all told.
I understand in other branches the name modified to Shillings.
I learned most of this from David Wright who I found a reference to on the web.The emigration to Canada was due to the Poor Law Amendements and David's branch went north to Sunderland and Co. Durham. where there was industrial work.
I've also found out much about George Henry Skillings' family.
I'm currently trying to get copies of things my parents wrote down when they discussed thefamily history with my grandfather Alan. They live in Ottawa now.
I'm living in England now and am hoping to visit Edgefield soon.
