Hi Matthew, I'm a Skillings girl and my Dad
was from the Ingersol area of Ontario.
His name was James Skillings and his father's
name was Alan Skillings, who married Annie Gertrude Hewitt. Alan's father was Elias Skillings and he was one of three children born to James Skillings and Elizabeth Edwards
who subsequently had six more children when they arrived in Canada. The Skillings, Edwards and Hewitts all came from a town in Norfolk in England called Edgefield.
Norfolk had a period in its history when it
was ruled by Danish Kings. Skilling is a monetary unit in both Norwegian and Danish history. There's a strong probability that it could derive from that, though the suffix ings generally means sons, I believe.
I live in England now and am doing a little tracing to see if I can determine anything further.
Hope that helps
