This is a tangent line for me, but Henry and Melinda show up next to my direct line in the 1850 census.
The family of Henry and Melinda are found on the census for 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880.I think they named their children after family members. Certainly, the names of Henry's parents and grandparents are used:
Joseph 1846 (Henry's father)
James 1848
William 1850
John 1852 (Henry's grandfather)
Martha 1853 (Henry's grandmother)
Stacy Ann 1854 (Henry's mother)
Henry 1856 (Henry jr.)
Andrew 1858
Thomas 1859
Leroy 1862
Melinda 1866 (Melinda jr.)
That leaves James, William, Andrew, Thomas and Leroy.
If one assumes that these names came from Melinda's side, you get this:
James (Melinda's brother)
William (Melinda's grandfather)
Andrew (Melinda's father)
That still leaves Thomas and Leroy.
I know this is not really proof, but I think if a couple is naming their children after ancestors, they probably used names from both sides.
Good Luck!
