I am researching the SKEHEN surname and recently have begun to suspect that the name, in its many variations, was originally SKENE out of the Scottish Highlands. My ancestors settled in Newfoundland Canada around 1750. There is a Skehen identified as a landowner in County Dublin, Ireland, but that individual's lineage came from Scotland. Have you by any chance ever encountered any of the following variants?: SKANES, SKAINES, SKEANS, SKAYNES.

All of the above variations have been used across different generations of my lineage. It appears that many of my ancestors were illiterate, and the records of birth, marriage, and death were registered by various clergy attending at the proceedings. It seems to me that the spelling of the surname depended on the individual making the record. Since names were spelled the way they were pronounced, it seems likely that the unique Newfoundland brogue could have resulted in changing spellings over many generations.
