The following may be helpful: One John Skelton died intestate, we know not when, but before 1704 when his wife Elizabeth appears on a record as a widow. His son John Skelton (Jr.) who appears often in the Surry and Isle of Wight deed books (as he lived in the Blackwater borderlands of those jurisdictions), left a will of 1701/4 (Chapman, Isle of Wight Wills, pp. 42, 43), mentioning only "wife and children." But his widow, Susannah, identifies three children in deeds of gift--William, James, and Sarah Skelton. There was another son Thomas Skelton, as he and the other three were named in the will of their grandfather Charles Edwards in 1713 (Chapman, Wills, p. 54).
