At the outbreak of the Civil War, August 26, 1861, he joined Company B, 23rd Missouri Infantry as a Private and served for over three years. He was in Trenton, Missouri during 1861, but in Spring of 1862, he went to Tennessee and participated in the battle of Shiloh, and the siege of Atlanta. He was captured at Shiloh, taken prisoner, and sent to Corinth, then, for safety to Menthis, Jackson, Mississippi, Mobvil and Montgomery, then to Macon, Georgia where he remained in prison for five months; was the, with many others, sent to Richmond, Virginia and was two days in Libby Prison. He was paroled, after being a prisoner six months and thirteen days; after two months in a United States hospital, he again joined his Company. After his discharge in Atlanta, Georgia on September 22, 1884; he returned home and to the pursuits of the farm. He was a member of the R.P.
