Anne,

This is the listing:
1880 census Anderson Co., SC Brushy Creek, ED 28, p.206B
#169 Mary E. GLADDEN w F 45 head wd/div Farm laborer NC NC NC
William GLADDEN w M 13 son Farm Laborer NC NC NC
#170 WILLIAM SIZEMORE w M 6 orphan Houseclean? SC SC SC
FRANK SIZEMORE w M 4 brother SC SC SC SC
Listed between George W. SMITH & Alexander ORR.

Even though these boys are listed as being in their own dwelling, they are definitely *not* old enough, at ages 6 & 4, to be living alone. They are most likely living with Mary E. Gladden.

The 1880 Mortality Schedule includes:
Brushy Creek
LINDA SIZEMORE 28 female - white - single - farm laborer - d Feb. - Pneumonia [b.1852]
MINNIE SIZEMORE 5/12 female - white - single
But, if Monroe said his mother's name was Mary, there apparently isn't a connection here.

I do have information on the families with a Mary in their household in 1860, and the 1869 state census shows:
1869 SC State Census Anderson Co.
P.85 SALLIE SIZEMORE Total all ages 4 wht F all over 18 [so all b. by 1851]
Listed between C.J. NIX & J.A.M CASON [see 1860 census & 1869 Pickens]
Note JK: Not found on the 1870 census! Was she missed or did she move?

Dicey, Henry's wife, is in Pickens Co.:
1869 SC State Census- Pickens Co.
P.32 DICEY SIZEMORE 1 wht F 6-18 Total all ages 1M 3F
Between Catharine NIX & J.?.A. COUCH

Mary is not in her household in 1870:
1870 Census Pickens Co., SC, Pickensville Twp. p.454 #93
Dicey SIZEMORE 40 F wht Housekeeper SC
Nancy SIZEMORE 16 F wht Farm Laborer SC
SARAH SIZEMORE 9 F wht SC
HENRY SIZEMORE 7 M wht SC
Listed between Samuel WILSON & Sidney COUCH

However, her daughter Susan and son Henry are also in Anderson Co.'s Brushy Creek area in 1880, #322:
Spence FULLER w M 42 head md Farmer [All births SC SC SC]
SARAH FULLER w F 17 wife md Farm laborer
Janie FULLER w F 1 dau. At home
HENRY SIZEMORE w M 16 bro.-in-law Farm laborer

If you would like to send me the info you have gathered on Monroe, I may see something in it that will ring a bell.

Joy
