Interesting indeed, Joy, thank you for writing. I did find Monroe living with Rebecca Holcomb, and followed up on her. She took Monroe in, but not William and Frank, who are listed in the 1880 census as homeless. Rebecca was one of the first workers at the Piedmont Mill, had a mill house on the village, and Monroe worked in the mill too. I think she just took Monroe because he was old enough to make a wage. I've been to her grave, talked with descendants in Florida, but they knew nothing about Monroe.
I have only a small "possible" for his mother, Mary Sizemore, in 1860 there are two Mary's living with Henry Sizemore, on the same page is John Smith.
Monroe took the name Smith before he married Sophia Bates, I have the line down from this couple. I have searched for two years for Mary, William & Frank. Where did you find William and Frank with the Gladden's? In 1880 they are listed as homeless. What a challenge!
Anne
