Here is a rough translation of a letter a copied from Lewis Covington (a collateral line) to Wier Boyd:
Georgia Gordon County May 23, 1871
Col. Wier Boyd, Dahlonega, Georgia
Dear Olde friend his through heavens blessings I am permitted to write a ______ as well as I remember has been most three years since I heard from you and I am anxious to hear from you once more soon. if no hinderence befalls me I expect to start for Texas about the first of Oct, next-and then it will be more difficult perhaps to hear from you though the distance of a thousand or two miles shall never drownd the thoughts with me of Olde Col Boyde.I would like to see you before starting if was in any power but I cant til yet. Col if I can possibly come to Dahlonega before I go away I will certainly do so.
My reasons for writing to you and in my writing expressing my feeling toward you is simply because I feel duty bound an account of your benevolence toward me in time of need. When I think of the late unhappy struggle I always let my mind run from the first to the last of it and of course I am bound to pause in the way and think of big shantie, Knoxville, Cumberland gap, and last of all, our return home from Knoxville together on Train. When this crosses my mind a tear must certainly swell in my eye and trinkle down my cheek. so I must close. I hope you will write me a long letter. I am as ever your true friend
Lewis T. Covington, Fairemount, Gordon, Co. Ga
