Hi Dale, Just happened to catch your posting. I would like to fill in further information on the family of Pleasant Sipes. Do you know when Pleasant & Elizabeth died? I wasn't able to find much on William Grayson Sipes. Do you think he was deceased before 1910? You mentioned the census for 1920 census for William Claude Sipes . . . I would like to add that to my records. Following is what I have been able to put together so far. Linda 1. N. Walter and her three brothers - Cleave, Frank and Edgar. They had moved from Missouri to Minnesota earlier and bought a ranch. While living in Minnesota, Dad hauled freight for the small country store, three times a week, using a team and wagon. This furnished our family with food and clothing. In the spring of 1917, after seven years of very cold, snowy winters and rainy summers and losing our home by fire, they decided to go to Bainville, Montana, where Mom's two brothers, Frank and Cleave, had gone a few years earlier and were working in a livery stable. Dad and my brother, Clarence, worked on the railroad the year we lived in Bainville. In 1918, Grandpa and Grandma Walter and son, Ed, sold their farm in Minnesota and moved to Bainville to be near their family. After arriving there with their carload of furniture, both families decided they wanted to live farther West, so Grandpa and Dad boarded a train and started West, not knowing where they were going to stop. Would you believe they stopped at Perma, Montana!. They were told that about ten miles north was land for sale in a beautiful little valley called Camas Prairie. They registered in Perma's Hotel Donlin. Some kind person offered them a ride in a topless Model T Ford. After going around many sharp curves on a narrow rocky road they arrived in Camas Prairie. Grandpa Walter decided to buy the J. W. VanArsdale homestead of 160 acres in the northwest corner of the valley. On it was a one-room, very small cabin made of logs, with the calking falling from between the logs. Also there was a two-story granary in need of repair. Dad Sipes didn't find a place to buy, but decided to live here too, so they returned to Bainville to bring their families. Brother Clarence came with the freight-car load of furniture, horses, cows and two dogs. The dogs jumped from the car and were lost. Grandpa, Grandma and three sons, Cleave, Frank and Ed came on a passenger train, all arriving on Camas Prairie on a cold, snowy November day in 1918. They lived in a house on the McFee homestead for three weeks while they repaired the granary for the boys to sleep in. They purchased a granary from the homestead adjoining them that had been deserted. They moved this and added it to the log cabin and made it into three rooms. The walls and floors were wide, rough boards. They pasted paper on the walls - it burst in the cracks as soon as it dried. They put a printed carpet on the living room floor. When the wind blew, it came up into a balloon. They put braided scatter rugs on the bedroom floors to keep out the cold and splinters out of their feet. Grandpa and Grandma Walters Having worked on the railroad in Bainville, Dad was able to get passes for all the family, but had to come by way of Sandpoint, Idaho, to Perma. We arrived on Camas Prairie on a cold February day in 1919. Brother Clarence had rented a house one-half mile south of the Central School from Mr. Corbitt for us to live in. Our family lived in this house three years. There was no farmland, so Dad got a job in the roundhouse in Paradise. He rode horse-back over the hill on days he could be home. Otherwise, he lived in a small house near his work. Miss Daisy Bartell, who was the first school teacher on Camas Prairie, donated a portion of her homestead for a site for the Central School building. This housed the grades and also the high school, an accredited high school having been established in 1912. Three of my brothers, Jonathan, Walter and Edgar and sister, Beatrice, were in the grades. My brother, Burton and I were in high school. Mrs. Nash was the prir ............. It's so frustrating that I'm unable to find anything on my own surname. So if anyone can help, I would be eternally grateful. Basically I'm trying to find information on my great grand parents ancestors. My Great grandfather was named William C Sipes, born around 1899 in Missouri and passed on around 1980. (not sure where, my folks say Oklahoma). His parents, according to 1920/30 census were from Indiana. He spent most of his life in Arizona with his spouse Dorothy born in Louisiana (dunno her maiden name) and they had four children, William Jr, Madelyn, Carolyn and my grandfather Donald K Sipes. William Sipes was a railroad worker for the Southern Pacific railroad as a signalman in Cochise/Yuma Counties. He was addressed as "Claude" from what I remember growing up in Phoenix. The only clue I've found thus far is from Cochise County school records circa 1910 that states he had a brother named Kenneth and a parent/gaurdian name W. G. Sipes. Again his parents were from Indiana. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks, Dale More About WILLIAM SIPES and STELLA UNK: Marriage: Abt. 1897 Child of WILLIAM SIPES and STELLA UNK is: 8. i.
