John Jefferson & Josiebell(Slaughter)Singleton lived in the Qulin area until the '60s or '70s. Then lived with Josie's daus' until they passed away in Jeff City, MO. Both had been married before so it was a his, hers, & their's situation with the children. Josie's 2 dau's (Mae & Sadie), John J's 2 dau's (Arby & ?), & their 2 sons (Hosey & Bozie Jefferson (BJ)) & 1 dau (Margy). They also raised John's grandson,Leonard. I don't know who Josie's husband was, but he might have been a James. She was reputed to have been related to Frank & Jesse James through her mother.

John was said to be 1/2 Indian (Cherokee ?). They were very secretive about John J's background. I don't think it was to safe to be an Indian when her was young. (Remember Cher's song "Half Breed"?) Josie was Dutch & quite stubern. She was an extremely hard worker. Josie had a brother named Henry Slaughter who was blind & sold gum, papers, & cigs in the Post Office in Cape Girauldou, MO.

All of their children have passed away. John J. lived to be about 97 while Josie died a few years later at 92, or was it the other way?

How else can I help?
