Obit for E. F. Singleton
Death Notice in Metro East Journal, East St. Louis, March 29, 1917 p. 5, col. 5:Essick F. Singleton died March 28th at 8 p.m. at the age of 57 yrears at his home, 311 Illinois Avenue. He leaves a wife, two sons, Arthur & Albert Singleton; one sister, Mrs. J. Harding, and two brothers, Harry and Huey Singleton.Deceased was a member of Gold Rule Lodge, I.O.O.F. Funeral from the residence of his sister, Mrs. J. W. Harding, 124 North Second Street, Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, to Okawville, Ill.He was employed by the L & N Railroad as section foreman, entering their service in the year of 1885.Benner-Brichler have charge of the funeral arrangements.
(my notes here:J. W. Harding was Newton S. Singleton's daughter..the ONLY daughter who lived to adult hood.I'm not sure of her first name..I believe it must have been Ida.Alice died barely out of her teens of typhoid fever, and Julie, the youngest daughter of Newton and Emily simply disappeared between census's...she was either 14 in 1880, and not listed, or had died by then. She was 4 in 1870 and of course we cannot trust everything the census taker entered.)
Arthur Essick Singleton (1886-1968) was the father of Clyde Arthur Singleton (1909-1975), and one adopted daughter, Hilda May Singleton (1920-Nov. 14, 2002).)
Art was retired from working for a railroad--he had workedfor the Louisville & Nashville Railroad
Notice how E. F.'s obit fails to mention the neice he and his wife had raised from when she was about a year old?She was married and living with her husband when he died.Always seemed odd to me that neither Essicks obit nor his wife's mentioned gramma at all!I wonder if there was a bit of jealousy there on E. F.'s sons.Ok that's all for now..I'm off to sleep..yeah..right LOL
