I don't have anything on Sterling's parents.I did a search and Sterling seems to be a family name from back in North Carolina. In the 1850 Rutherford County, Tn census there is a Sterling that was born in 1785.Most likely a grandfather. However, I do believe that Nancy McCormick, James McClure McCormick's wife, was a daughter of Edmund Goff. I know that the info that has been posted about the Goff family does not have her listed as a daughter. In the 1860 Henderson County census, Edmund's son, Robert, is listed as being born in Alabama. Nancy Goff was also born in Alabama, a couple of years older than Robert.I also believe that there is an older relationship between the Singletons and the McCormick dating back to North Carolina.
