Singletary vs Singleterry spelling

As far as I know the Singletary's that left Walker County, Georgia towards the end of the Civil War (with the Dickey's) changed the spelling of their name to Singleterry to disassociate themselves from those relatives that fought for the South. This would be Joseph Wilson Singleterry and his family. The Dickey's and Joseph Wilson Singleterry (father: James "The Short" Singletary) were conscientious objectors to slavery.
At least this is what I've always heard from my Singleterry relatives.
