Well, Singh is a Sikh name found predominantly in the Punjab region of North India. According to "Asian American Genealogical Sourcebook" (Byers;)...
"In given names [Indian] with two elements, one of the elements typically indicates gender. For Sikhs, 'Singh' is used only by men and 'Kaur' only by women; consequently Satwant Singh is a masculine name while Satwant Kaur is feminine."
Etymogically speaking, 'Singh' may be related to the Hindi word "Simha" meaning lion. However, don't quote me on that :-)
