Sophie marie Clarke born 1857. Parents james Clarke born Framlingham Suffolk England 1813 came to Singapore in 1841 or 1842. Between 1843 and 1857 had 9 children with Belamin Cashin of malacca. She was Chinese but had been adopted by a Maltese family.
The children were all baptised at St Joshephs Church Singapore. James Clark owned a business in Commercial Square Singapore In 1845 he was a ships provisioner and a commission agent.
In 1859 the family left for Liverpool on the Ravenscraig. He died off the coast of Sumatra and his widow returned with the children to Singapore.(Information from a book about Eurasian families in Singapore).
Sophie was the youngest of the children
She married twice. The first was to Aurthur Merrills and the second to a Mr Phipps.
Her obituary in the Singapore free press on 28/9/1932
"Mrs Sophie Phipps 24a Lerong M Telok Karau Rd . Death took place on Sunday aged 75. Youngest of the children of james Clarke who were residents in Singapore 100 years ago. Last of her family. She has 8 children 31 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Her funeral at Bididari on Monday following a church service at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd Right Rev Rouddel took the service."
The notice then lists those who gave wreaths.
Sophies children were Harriet, Frank, Arthur, Charles Alec. Olive, Thomas and Cyril.
