Wendy,
Bertram Harold Symes was born c.1892, He lived in Malaya from 1913 where he was a planter. He married Margaret, probrably in Malaya. (believe her to be his second wife) Bertram was in Changi from 1942, but Margaeret and Ellen Symes (Bertrams mother) were evacuated on the Empress of Japan to Liverpool. Bertram died in the Isle of Man in 1956. He had a son John Edward Symes born Malaya 1923. If you have any information regarding the biological mother of John Edward Symes, I would appreciate it. The name Violet Faithfull has come up, maybe they were related in some way in Malaya.
